Basketball Rules

1.       Rules:

Official National Federation of State High School rules will be followed except as modified below.

2.       Players:

The game is played between two teams of five.  All players must show their UWA ID to the game officials before they are eligible to play.

3.       Clothing:

Game jerseys with numbers are supplied by the IM Department.  Should a team desire to play in their own jerseys, they should all be of the same color with numbers plainly legible on the back.  ID’s are required for checkout of jerseys.  No black soled shoes which mark the floor, barefoot or stocking feet are allowed.  Jewelry is not to be worn (this includes rings, watches and earrings).  Wedding bands will be allowed to remain on fingers if desired.

4.       Court Policies:

Food and beverages may not be brought into the gymnasium area.  All food and beverages must remain in the lobby of the gym.  Conduct of the spectators is the responsibility of the Team Captain before, during, and after the game.

5.       Conducting the Game:

A.     A game will consist of two halves of 20 minutes each.  The clock will stop only for team and official time-outs during the first 18 minutes of each half.  After which, the clock will be stopped on all whistles.

B.      Game time is forfeit time.

C.      All games will start with a jump ball unless preceded by a technical foul.  All held balls will result in the alternating possession arrow being used.  All overtimes will begin with a jump ball unless preceded by a technical foul.

D.      Teams will be allowed two (2) time-outs per half.  No carryover of time-outs from the first to second half is allowed.  Teams will be allowed to carryover all unused time outs from the end of regulation to overtime and from one over time to the next.

6.       Free Throws and Fouls:

A.     Personal fouls on missed three point tries will result in three free throws.  On made three point shots, one free throw will be given.

B.      PLAYERS MAY NOT ENTER THE LANE AREA UNTIL THE BALL HAS TOUCHED THE BACKBOARD OR RIM ON A FREE THROW ATTEMPT.

C.      The ball will be awarded out of bounds on all common (non-shooting) fouls until the seventh (7th) foul of each half.  On all subsequent non-shooting fouls, a one and one bonus will be given.  On the tenth (10th) foul of each half, the two-shot bonus will be invoked.

D.      There are no free throws awarded in a player control foul situation.  Player control fouls do count towards the teams bonus situation.

E.       On all technical fouls (except double technical fouls), two (2) points will be awarded to the opposing team plus the ball out of bounds at the division line.  No free throws will be attempted for a technical foul.  Technical fouls are counted towards a players disqualification (five fouls) and the teams bonus situation.  Two technical fouls by any player or directly at the designated coach will result in ejection from the game and the gym.  Three total technical fouls, indirect or direct technical fouls attributed to the coach will result in ejection.  Players, coaches or fans ejected from a game are ineligible for any further play pending their meeting with the Intramural Staff.

F.       On all the intentional fouls (except for double intentional fouls), two (2) free throws and possession of the ball at the spot nearest the foul will be awarded.  An intentional foul during an unsuccessful three point attempt will result in three shots and the ball.  On a made three point shot, two (2) shots and the ball.

G.      On all flagrant fouls, players will be given two shots (three if in the act of an unsuccessful three try) and the ball and the offending player will be ejected from the game.

7.       Substitutes:

All subs must report to the scorer’s table.  Subs may be made only during a dead ball situation and the players must wait to be beckoned onto the floor by the game officials.  Players attempting to substitute during time-outs and between halves must report before the 45 second warning period has elapsed.  NOTE: Players arriving at the game late may be added to the score sheet without penalty after showing their photo ID to the scorekeeper.

8.       Official Score:

The official score of the game will be kept by an IM scorekeeper. It is highly recommended the each team provide one (1) person to assist the scorekeeper with identification of names and proper number assignments.  In the event of any discrepancy, the running score of the game score sheet is the official score.

9.       Mercy Rule:

No full court press will be allowed when a team achieves a 30 point or greater lead.  If a team continues to lead by 30 or more points with two (2) minutes to go in the 2nd half the game will be considered complete.  To avoid injuries and prevent conflicts, a game will be considered complete at ANY time a 50 point or greater lead is attained.  If a team attempts to make a mockery of the game by continually attempting to keep their lead under these point margins, the game may be forfeited and the win given to the team that is trailing.

10.    Overtime:

If the score is tied at the end of regulation play, the game will continue without exchange of baskets for an overtime of three (3) minutes.  The clock will stop on all whistles during the last minute of this period.  A team will be allowed to carry over all unused time-outs from the second half to the overtime and will be granted one additional time-out.

11.    Conduct of Coaches:

Coaches are defined as non-playing, not-dressed-to-play individuals.  Only one person may be designated as a coach and sit on a team’s bench.  Coaches must remain in their coaching box of 6’ long by 4’ deep beginning at the end of the bench closest to the scorer’s table.  Coaches may stand in this area as long as they are coaching their players.  All other bench personnel must remain seated at all authorized times.  A technical foul on a coach or bench personnel will result in revocation of the coaches ability to stand as any spokespersons on the floor.  When the team captain is out of the game, no designated spokesperson is authorized.
